Feeling changed by one trip
Being open to change everyday is what makes life worth living
There can be so much said for travelling alone to a country you’ve never been to before but I think change is the best word.
I don’t think I’d be the same person before going on my trip, but it wasn’t until my last night it all clicked together how much travelling solo for the first time would actually change my path in life.
You see, I was feeling pretty lost, had just decided that the path I was on education wise wasn’t for me and I needed something that would allow me to actually see the world and be free to work almost anywhere.
Following a few friends that I met around Bali, I went to a party held in a skate park. All of the sudden we were on our way to a minimart and when inside, we opened a fridge to find a small secret bar inside. It was such a surprise to me and opening that secret door actually lead me on an interesting path.
That’s when me and a friend sat down in the outside area of the bar and started chatting up with other people there. I recalled my sadness about the trash in the ocean and that I really wanted to help. One of them pipes up and tells me does dive clean ups every week as a dive instructor living on the Gili islands.
”Oh? A dive instructor.. how does one even become a dive instructor?”
He explained everything pretty well, said that it wasn’t a long education, but he liked what he does and I was fascinated.
Finally, it all made sense! I don’t even think I waited until I got home, I was so excited to see if Kilroy knew something about it so I started researching right away.
I sent them an email asking about something that would combine becoming a Dive Professional and marine conservation in one!
They luckily had just partnered up with one of the best companies for this, Marine Conservation Philippines, but that’s a story for another day.
So, I guess you could say this is my Divemaster origin story..
